NEVADA TEEN DRIVER REQUIREMENTS

Getting a Nevada driver’s license as a teen involves several important steps. Here is a quick overview to help you understand the process.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Teens ages 14–17 must provide proof of school attendance when applying for a learner’s permit or driver’s license.

DRIVER EDUCATION

Most Nevada drivers under 18 must complete a driver education course. Teens may enroll starting at age 15.

Depending on their situation, students may complete:

•⁠ ⁠An approved classroom or online driver education course plus 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night; or
•⁠ ⁠100 hours of supervised driving if they meet the Nevada DMV requirements for this option.

LEARNER’S PERMIT

Teens can apply for an instruction permit at 15½ years old. The application requires identification and residency documents, a vision test, a written knowledge test, and parent/guardian approval.

While driving with a permit, the teen must be accompanied by a qualified licensed adult.

SUPERVISED DRIVING

Before getting a license, teens generally need 50 hours of supervised driving, including 10 hours at night. Driving with a professional instructor can count toward the required hours.

Keep a written driving log and bring it to the DMV skills test.

DMV DRIVING SKILLS TEST

To qualify for a teen driver’s license, the applicant must generally:

•⁠ ⁠Be at least 16 years old
•⁠ ⁠Hold the instruction permit for at least 6 months
•⁠ ⁠Complete the required driver education and supervised driving
•⁠ ⁠Meet Nevada DMV eligibility requirements
•⁠ ⁠Pass the driving skills test

AFTER GETTING YOUR LICENSE

Nevada places additional restrictions on drivers under 18, including passenger limitations and a 10 p.m.–5 a.m. driving curfew, with certain exceptions.
